Nerja - Hidden Jewel of the South

Originally a fishing village, Nerja is a charming Spanish town perched on the Mediterranean against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains, 32 miles from Malaga airport.

Wander through the magical winding streets and browse amongst the boutiques until you come to the palm-lined Balcon de Europa (balcony of Europe) jutting out over the Mediterranean, with sweeping views of the coastline and mountains on either side. Relax at one of the open-air cafés on the square, where you can watch the horse-drawn carriages go by. Or stroll along the beach and sample the local seafood and a glass of sangria at one of the beach-front restaurants.

In the evening, the town lights up! There many restaurants serving food to cater to all tastes, tapas bars (pubs that serve snacks) and several nightclubs. You can watch a flamenco show at one of the local bars or visit the cultural centre for a variety of musical and artistic performances.

* A tour of the white villages, including nearby Frigiliana, voted the prettiest village in Spain
* A visit to the famous caves where classical concerts and ballet performances are held in the summer months.

If you are here for a longer stay, you might like to travel further afield to Seville, Cordoba, Ronda, Jerez and Cadiz.

Fiestas and Ferias
(Festivals and Fairs)

Andalucians are friendly and easy-going, and believe in enjoying life. This is never more evident than during fiestas and ferias, when the women put on their brightly-coloured frilly dresses and the men show off on horseback. The festivities usually go on for about a week every Spring in the larger towns of Granada and Seville, and in smaller towns at various times during the year.

Andalucia is a region of great natural beauty, and there are several large nature reserves nearby. If you need time out from all the fiestas, you might like to get back to nature on a jeep trek through the high sierras, or with a gentle game of golf.
